With carnivals not opening this season, my family decided it might be a fun idea to do our own take on what we love most about them — the food. The idea was that everyone should think of their favorite carnival food and make it for everyone to have. I, of course, went for the loaded baked potato, but the other top favorites were kettle corn, apple sangria, fried Oreos, and cheesy fries. Delicious, right?
I think the allure of carnivals or fairs inevitably changes as you get older. As I kid, the Ferris wheel and all the other “games” appealed to me, but as I’ve grown older, the only reason I go is to stuff myself with all the food I could never do the other 364 days of the year. Let's be honest, there really is nothing like carnival food, am I right? From fried dough to caramel apples, they really do have something for everyone.
As I mentioned earlier, so many of my favorites were already “chosen” to be made by other family members (which I wasn’t upset about at all) so I took another solid one — the loaded baked potato. I actually did a lot of research into what makes the best baked potato and what I found was very interesting. The real game-changer was the kind of cheese you used. Instead of using shredded cheese, use nacho cheese! As soon as I read that, I knew it was going to be a winner. I also knew that I probably couldn’t get it to taste exactly like the ones we would get at the carnival, but I was going to try my hardest to get it as close to the original as I possibly could. As the weeks go on, I’ll also try to get the recipes for some of my family members for the other golden treats, such as the blueberry pie, fried Oreos, and the apple sangria.
