I don’t know what it is about this show that keeps me coming back to it but I love it. It doesn’t hurt that Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate star in this incredibly weird, yet lovable, show — which actually describes their character’s relationship perfectly.
The second season picks up right where the first one left off — Jen has just killed Steve. She calls Judy and all is forgiven as the first episode is concluded. While I’m happy that the whole season wasn’t the two of them fighting constantly, I’ll admit that most of these episodes were annoying. First and foremost, there’s Ben — Steve’s twin brother. Of course, this never came up at all until the end of the first episode. What bugs me is that this is clearly just a way to keep James Marsden on the payroll and it’s not even clever. How many shows are going to get away with the lost long or twin brother scenario? It’s not even realistic! Then there was the whole Judy/Michelle romance that was borderline weird. At first, I kind of liked them, but towards the end, it just became annoying. Not to mention that Michelle used to date Perez, the police detective… All these weird connections between the characters are just annoying at this point.
While Jen and Judy were #goals (as always) this season and even though Judy will always be my number one/spirit animal on the show, I think Charlie, Jen’s oldest son, came out on top in Season Two. On top of being hilarious, he also doesn’t put up with his mom’s B.S. Even when he’s being a little sh*t, you can’t hate him — he’s too funny. The show also introduced Judy’s mom toward the end of the season, played by the awesome Katy Sagal. She will definitely bring something good to Season Three which I'm very excited about!
It was just announced a few weeks ago that the third season will also be the final season and while this may sound weird, it's something that I’m glad to hear. Not because I didn’t enjoy watching it but because there are so many shows that go on way too long just because they can. I have more respect for shows who tell the story they want to tell and get out rather than overstay their welcome. Usually, when shows do this, the remaining seasons tend to suck because the writers have no stories to tell anymore. Regardless, while I thought this season was so-so, the only really good episode I thought they had was the finale. Jen actually confesses to killing Steve, when Perez, in a shocking turn of events, tells her to basically “forget about it.” Then Ben finds out about Steve being dead and drives his car into Jen’s while she and Judy are driving home said car to surprise Charlie. That’s how the season ends — with the car in the middle of the road. Suffice to say, I’m very intrigued as to how this series is going to end.
Finally, before I end this, just after the news of Season Three being the last came out, some fan theories popped up suggesting that Dead to Me is a prequel to Grace and Frankie — basically, Jen and Judy grow up to be Grace and Frankie and I just have to say that I'm here for it. While it may not be true, I love stuff like this. Click here if you want to read more about it!
