Family Fun Day 2020

In honor of my parent’s anniversary, I thought it might be a fun idea to create a day full of fun, family, and good food. As the years have gone by, getting my parent’s a gift for their anniversary has gotten harder and harder, if only because I begin to repeat myself. So this year, I decided that instead of a gift card or a sentimental photo of all of us, I would try to get all the siblings together and have some fun.

It started with a trip to the grocery store where my sister and I got a nice spread for lunch. We decided on doing a deli platter with chips and dip, some veggies and fruit, potato salad, and of course, refreshing drinks to hold us over for the whole day. I also decided to make Nutella-covered strawberries for dessert. Needless to say, we were set to take on a day full of games. The teams were split into Girls (Red Team) VS. Boys (Blue Team), with matching T-shirts and everything. The captains of each team were, of course, the parents, and the winner of the “Family Games” would get to pick their “prize" first, a.k.a. one of two gift cards that we got so they could treat themselves to a nice dinner.

In terms of the actual games, the first up was Cup Pong, which is the family-friendly game of the classic Beer Pong, but without any actual alcohol involved. The boys won by a landslide. This also is true of the next game — volleyball. We girls tried but that was a hard loss. I should also mention that this was all played in the pouring rain. Not that it’s an excuse because most of us had a lot of fun playing in the rain, myself included. It just felt more dramatic that way. Following that loss, we headed inside for the final two games — Jenga and Marvel trivia. You’ll be happy to know that the girls dominated them, making the game tied. This brought us to the tiebreaker — “Rock, Paper, Scissors” between the two captains and that's how the boys got their win. However, this is my Family Games, and as Head Gamemaker, I decided that there would be no real losers, hence the TWO gift cards for the parents.

As the day came to a close, we all huddled in the living room, eating the Nutella-covered strawberries while the boys watched the baseball game on TV. Others fell asleep until it was time for everyone to go their separate ways (or get seconds of the food for dinner). 😂 All in all, it was a very successful day as the parents had a blast and we all got to be together! Win-Win!
