Movie of the Week: Apollo 13

Given the fact that it’s the 51st Anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, which ran from April 11th to April 17, 1970, what better time than to rewatch this amazing film!?

Directed by Ron Howard, this movie stars some of my favorite actors ever — Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise, and Ed Harris. Obviously, this is based on the true story of the Apollo mission in which the astronauts Jim Lovell (Hanks), Jack Swigert (Bacon), and Fred Haise (Paxton) were intending to land on the moon. However, after an on-board explosion, all three are faced with the possibility that they may not take it back home — and that’s putting it lightly.

For those who may not have seen it yet, I won’t spoil the whole thing. However, if I’m being honest, even knowing how the story ends, from both the history books and watching the movie multiple times, does not make this movie any less enjoyable or heart-stopping. I swear, the ending of the mission gets me every.single.time. So even if you haven’t seen it (which, what are you waiting for!? GO WATCH IT!), this film is guaranteed to be one of your favorites.

While the story itself is incredible, it’s only made even better with the performances from all the actors. The main three in particular, Hanks, Paxton, and Bacon, are sooooo good. Would you expect anything less? That combined with the talents of Ron Howard (director of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, etc.) makes this movie a winner. Everything about this movie is just incredible. Not only does it demonstrate how huge and important the space program really was, but it also shows the true bravery these men had. Watching them navigate these scary situations that I myself would just fall apart at is so humbling, and I’m sure you’ll feel the same once you watch this movie.

While I have no desire to become an astronaut myself, or even go to space for that matter, I am all for this genre of film. Aw, hell, any movie that involved the aforementioned people above will pretty much guarantee that I’m going to watch — and enjoy— the movie. In general, though, I love space movies and Apollo 13 will (probably) always be my favorite. Every bit of it keeps you glued to the screen as you hope and pray that these guys make it home. With something in it for everyone, I’m positive this movie will make your week.

Let me know what you think about this movie in the comments below!
