Doris Roberts returns as Mrs. Miracle in this cute Christmas sequel. This time, we find her as a clerk in a toy store, run by a father and son whose relationship is not so warm and fuzzy. The son, Jake, played by Andrew Walker, is the store manager and makes a bet with his withdrawn father, J.R., that he can sell out the store by Christmas. If he doesn’t, he’ll quit his job. On top of that, there’s also Holly, played by Jewel Staite, a woman who is taking care of her nephew, Gabe, as his father was deployed overseas, and she’s in a little over her head as her demanding boss doesn’t seem to understand that not everything revolves around her. Luckily, Mrs. Miracle is there to make everything better. As she does her best meddling, both Holly and Jake may end up having their best Christmas ever!
If I had to choose, I think I would say that this film is only slightly better than the original because it takes place in the city (I think it’s New York, but I’m not sure, and you all know that Christmas in New York is amazing), so it’s already got a festive setting. On top of that, Jake works in a toy store, so obviously that adds to the ambiance! The only thing I disliked was that I felt like Mrs. Miracle was toned down in this sequel. We never saw her character outside the department store and she rarely interacted with Holly and/or Gabe. In the original, she was involved in all the character’s lives, but now she seems to just stick with Jake and his father, J.R. Oh well….
All in all, I did really enjoy this film. Both Holly and Jake have a cute love story and the film sheds a light on the sacrifices that all the military men and women make, including their families, during the holiday seasons, which not many Christmas films recognize so I definitely loved that. Doris Roberts is fabulous and as a sequel, this one definitely lives up to the original. It’s cute and got all the trimmings for a cozy Christmas movie! I think you all will enjoy it!
