Doris freakin Roberts stars in this gem.
If you don’t know who she is, that’s okay. I may be judging you (just a little bit) but it’s okay.
Starring as the title character, Roberts plays Mrs. Miracle, a "nanny" who comes to help a single father, Seth (James Van Der Week) with his rather energetic twins. Having just lost his wife, Seth struggles with his role as a father and what his kids really need. As his new housekeeper/nanny, Mrs. Miracle does more than help around the house. In the kindest, and most of the time, very obvious, way possible, she pushes Seth to open his heart and let people in again, including the new music teacher, Reba (Erin Karpluk).
I had seen this years ago and completely forgot about it until it came on the TV a while ago. Doris Roberts is obviously my favorite, but the story is fairly cute as well. Watching Mrs. Miracle intervene is definitely the highlight of the film. With all her magical capabilities and cheesy one-liners, Mrs. Miracle will keep you entertained throughout the entire film.
Without spoiling anything, the only thing that really annoyed me was Reba’s storyline. Something happened to the character that causes her to be somewhat closed off and because of that, she does not have a relationship with her sister. In my opinion, I think she is totally justified being closed off. What annoys me is how everyone around her acts as if she’s overreacting or being stubborn for something that can be “easily” forgiven. I one-hundred-percent do not agree and completely understand why she gets upset with her mom for trying to get her to mend her relationships. Sometimes, with TV movies, I find that the background stories for some of the characters aren't that fleshed out, which leaves them with stories that aren't that realistic and in turn, can cause the audience to disengage from the story a little bit. I found myself doing that with Reba's storyline. While I understand that the point they are trying to get across is that life is too short (which it is), I’m also a firm believer that if you’ve been hurt by a loved one, sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to just move on. I know that’s easier said than done and that this is just a movie, so I shouldn’t get too worked up about it, but I just had to get that out. I think they could have still gotten their point across without adding in all the sister drama, but I guess we can't change the past, right? Considering this movie came out in 2009, I'd say it's a little late!
Aside from that, I would recommend watching this film. It’s got a sequel (with a new cast, aside from Roberts), which I will review next week. I would say this film is Mary Poppins meets Christmas galore, which I have no problem with. By the end of the film, you’ll wish she was real, whether it’s as your nanny or not-so-subtle matchmaker. I think you'll really enjoy this one!
