I have been seeing advertisements for this film for a while now so when it finally debuted on Netflix, I knew I had to watch it. What was even better was that I made it a Netflix Party night with one of my good friends, who was also excited to watch it. Starring Millie Bobbie Brown, Helena Bonham Carter, Henry Cavill, and Sam Claflin (along with many others), this film breathes the exciting and mysterious feeling of a typical Holmes movie.
This follows Enola Holmes (Brown), the younger sister of Sherlock (Cavil) and Mycroft (Claflin) as she sets out to find her mother (Carter), who has recently gone missing. Of course, she meets some new characters along the way who make this two-hour film fly by. I thought Brown did a great job as Enola. Her relationship with Cavil really plays well on screen, as we discover that Enola seems to have inherited Sherlock’s detective skills. Both Sherlock and Enola’s scenes were the highlight of the film for me as you could see the excitement both had at uncovering these mysteries, thereby making you equally excited to see them solve it.
While I thought this was a fun and innovative movie, the only qualm I had about this was Carter’s character. By the end of the film, I still wasn’t sure why she had gone missing. At first, I thought it was just a plan she had created to help Enola discover the world and who she is as a person, but that ended up just being a happy circumstance. Unfortunately, we never do get a real answer as to why she disappeared. Instead, the film ends with Enola being on her own, knowing that Sherlock has her back and vice versa. Hopefully, this means we are getting a sequel in the near future, but nothing has been announced.
I would give this film a B+. At the end of the day, it’s still just a mystery movie, and while that’s not a diss to that genre, it pretty basic in terms of its format, especially when it comes to a Sherlock Holmes-themed film which includes a mystery that no one else can solve, clues that only a Holmes detective could find, and a surprising ending that you didn’t see coming. Nevertheless, it was funny and intriguing with feminist tones without being too in your face about it. As someone who loves a good mystery, this one was fun and very family-friendly. Whether you’re watching it with friends, family, or just on your own, you’re bound to have a good time.
