Movie of the Week: Onward

As many of you know, I’m a Disney freak. I signed up for Disney + the day it was announced and I’ve been obsessed with the streaming service ever since. I’m also loving how they are streaming their latest releases, such as Frozen II and Star Wars. This week, I decided to watch the animated film, Onward.

Starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, this movie follows two brothers Ian (Holland) and Barley (Pratt) who are on a quest to spend one last day with their dad, who passed away years before. How is that possible you ask? Well, apparently their father was a magician of some kind, and before passing, left both sons a spell to bring him back for one more day. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned and they only bring back the lower half of their dad. In order to bring him back in full, the brothers must go on an adventure together to figure out this mystery.

I have to say that my favorite parts of this movie were the beginning and the end. The middle was somewhat dull. Maybe I have to rewatch it, but the whole “quest” part didn’t pique my interest. What did, however, was the relationship between the two brothers, especially towards the end of the film. Without spoiling anything, Ian and Barley have a very sweet moment at the end that’s worthy of an “awww” and maybe a few tears. I would say this is just another Frozen but with brothers and no musical scenes.

This film is definitely one that kids will enjoy. It’s got magical creatures, a quest, and two sweet brothers with a very determined mother (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus). It will bring laughs and entertain kids from beginning to end. For adults, however, you might want to use this as an opportunity to take a short nap. Just wake up for the ending. I promise you won’t miss a thing.

Have you seen this movie yet? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below!
