If you love Elton John, then you’ll LOVE this film. If you don’t love Elton John, you’ll love this film.
I could leave the review just like that but I should probably be a bit more descriptive. Seeing as Elton John's birthday is this week (the 25th), what better time to review this than now?
You can definitely tell that Elton John had a hand in making this movie because it was SO him. If I’m honest, the first time I heard an Elton John song was on The Lion King soundtrack. “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” is still one of my favorite songs of all time. Maybe it’s because I can link it back to my childhood, but every time I hear it, I swoon a little. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized how many songs of his I had already listened to and loved. My mom is also a huge fan of his and part of the reason I grew up already known so much of his stuff is just because she would sing to it in the car or in the house. Obviously, this is just one person’s opinion, but unlike other artists, Elton’s songs aren’t ones that you have to get older to appreciate, do you know what I mean? Even as a kid, I thought they were great. That’s what I loved about this movie. Even if you’ve NEVER heard any of his stuff, you’re hooked by the end regardless.
Played by the actor Taron Egerton in the title role, who did a phenomenal job, this movie follows Elton on his journey to becoming the man we know today, or so I thought. I’ll admit, I didn’t know much about Elton personally, I just knew his music. This film, as one would hope given that it’s a biopic, gives you an inside look at what really went on when he was climbing the charts as this mega artist. What surprised me the most about this was that instead of it being just a biopic, was that it was also a musical using Elton’s songs and I loved it.
I could keep writing, but this is one that you should go watch instead of reading about it. I hope you liked it as much as I did!
