Movie of the Week: Spider-Man: Far From Home

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

For those who are living under a rock, this is the first Marvel movie post-Endgame and I really enjoyed it. Tom Holland as Spider-man killed it once again as the title character. If I’m being honest, the thing that brought me to the theaters was not because I was interested in the next Spider-man story — it was to see how they handled this universe following the death of Tony Stark. Tom Holland himself admitted that it felt weird to play this character without Robert Downey Jr. being a part of it, seeing as Tony was a big part of his evolution into the Spider-man he is today. I’m pleased to say that they handled it very well. They put just the right amount of attention to it without making it all about Iron Man. It acknowledges that things are different without Stark and that he meant a lot to Peter without it being a two-hour memorial (which does start off the film, coincidentally).

The new character in this universe, Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, did give me pause. I didn’t think it was supposed to be a surprise, but I knew going into the movie that Mysterio was going to be the villain. Didn’t everybody? Apparently not because the movie made us wait until the middle to reveal this “shocking” betrayal. For the first half, he’s “best buds” with not just Spiderman, but even Fury and Hall, who already trust him. Is anyone else's Spidey-senses tingling? Either way, while I love Jake Gyllenhaal, I found Mysterio to be a bit annoying. Aside from the ending, I failed to see how this villain helped the Spider-man story evolve, which is usually the point of villains in superhero movies, is it not?

My favorite part of this movie ended up not being a person, but an inanimate object — Stark's glasses. And when Peter put them on, a little “awww” was mumbled under my breath. For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, Tony Stark left his (very expensive and iconic) glasses to Peter Parker himself. These glasses come with, you guessed it, a great deal of power. I’m actually not kidding. At one point, Peter sends off a missile (by accident) and almost kills one of his classmates, which was actually one of the funniest parts of the movie.

Villain aside, the other half of this movie followed Peter as he tried to muck up the courage to tell MJ how he feels. When they finally do admit it to each other, while cute, it did feel a little out of left field for me. At the end of the first film, they were barely friends and now he suddenly has a massive crush on her. Okay.... Anyways, after they get together, the end of the film finds him swinging the both of them around New York before the inevitable cliffhanger appears. Right in the middle of Times Square, Mysterio appears on the news revealing…duh, duh, duh….that Peter Parker is Spider-man. Again, this wasn’t too surprising to me, but it is a big moment for the franchise and, like Tony Stark revealing the fact that he was Iron Man at the end of his first film, I’m sure this reveal will bring more interesting things to come for the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. Whether it's because Tom Holland plays this character so well or because Marvel has captured my heart is not important. I think a lot of people will and have enjoyed this film and I'm excited to see what the third film will reveal. If you didn't know, the title of the third film was recently revealed, and just from what I've heard in the news, it's going to be incredible. Check it out below!
