Movie of the Week: The Parent Trap

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

Is it even really summer if you haven’t watched The Parent Trap? If you ask me, then the answer is definitely NOT. I have loved this movie since I was a kid, so maybe it’s that nostalgic feeling that makes me watch this time and time again. That and the fact that it takes place during the summer makes this the ultimate summer movie.

Directed by the fantastic Nancy Meyers, this remake gave Lindsay Lohan her start in the movie business. Lohan stars as both Hallie and Annie, twins who are determined to get their parents back together. Both girls were, in my opinion, extremely cool. One had an accent who wasn't afraid to speak her mind and the other was a tomboy, who was ready to get down and dirty at a moment's notice. However, I have to admit that Hallie was my favorite. So much so that I tried (unsuccessfully) to convince everyone in my family to call me Hallie because even her name was cool. Did any of you have a favorite twin?

One of my favorite things about Nancy Meyer’s movies, other than the stories themselves, is the look of them. For example, as both Annie and Hallie go “home,” we are taken to two different, but equally stunning, places. One resides in London, whose mother, Elizabeth, played by the late Natasha Richardson, designs wedding dresses. The other lives in Napa, California, where their father, Nick Parker, played by Dennis Quaid, "grows grapes to make wine." As a kid (and hell, even now) I would've killed to live in such amazing places. Wine Country and London!? HELL YES! The houses were beautiful and the places they got to visit were beautiful. What’s not to envy?

This film is also responsible for starting my obsession with peanut butter and Oreos. If for some reason you haven’t seen this movie yet, you’ll get it within the first twenty minutes of the film. That is why the featured recipe of the week is a Peanut Butter Oreo dessert (link here). Hand over heart, if anyone makes a dessert that features chocolate and peanut butter, I will eat it without a seconds hesitation. That's how much I love it (almost as much as I love this movie). I've been watching this movie for almost twenty-five years and the ending still makes me swoon. That's the sign of a great movie in my opinion. No matter how many times you watch it, it feels as if you're watching it for the very first time. In general, The Parent Trap has all one could want in a summer movie — romance, humor (a.k.a lizards), and two hours full of childhood nostalgia.

Have you seen this film? What do you think of it? Let me know in the comments!
