As you may have noticed in the past week’s posts, Hilary Duff holds a special place in my heart. Maybe it was writing about how much I love her that got me in the mood to watch this or maybe it was the fact that I just hadn't seen it in a while, but whatever it was, it led me to this gem. I’m actually surprised I haven’t written about it before seeing as her character in the film inspired me to start thinking about starting my own blog — even then (I believe this came out in 2005 but don’t quote me). Of course, I was waaayy to young to do that then, but now that I’m older, watching this film makes my thirteen-year-old self feel very proud.
The Perfect Man follows Holly (Duff), the eldest daughter of Jean (Heather Locklear), a man-obsessed mother who moves her daughters to a new place every time she breaks up with a man (or they break up with her). Frustrated and tired after another move, Holly decides to create “the perfect man” for her mother in an attempt to make their current move stick. As you can imagine, things start to get tricky when her mom starts to fall for this “secret admirer.” Not to mention that Holly starts to have a romance of her own and must decide how she is going to handle these newfound obstacles.
I absolutely love this movie. Yes, it’s cheesy and pretty predictable, but I don’t really hold romantic comedies to a strict yes or no opinion in terms of how “good” it is. Most of the time, romantic comedies follow the same guidelines and that’s totally fine with me. With these types of movies, I almost like predictability. You get what you signed up for. What makes me go back to this time and again is Hilary. Of course, as with many of my favorite movies, nostalgia plays a big part, but it’s also the fantasy. I loved her character, I loved her style, and I loved…her laptop. She had the iBook! Ever since Legally Blonde came out, I really wanted one. Of course, I just liked the design. The fact that it was just another computer had no relevance to me and I know I’m not the only one who felt that way! The character, Holly, blogs about her experiences as “Girl On the Move,” and to say I wanted to be her is a total understatement.
There’s not much for me to say other than if you’re a Hilary Duff fan or just looking for a sweet romantic comedy, this is one to watch. It’s got great characters (Lance, anybody?!) and a very cute romance between a couple of the characters, so you’re definitely in for a good time. I hope you all like it!
