Movie Review: A Christmas Tree Grows in Colorado

I’m not going to lie — I tuned into this for Mark Taylor. If any of you have seen Seventeen Again (with Tia and Tamara Mowry), you’ll know what I’m talking about. Taylor is just another one of those actors who has not aged. He still looks so good! I’m officially putting him in the #HunksofHallmark category. As for this movie, it stars both him and Rochelle Aytes as Kevin, a single father and firefighter, and Erin, the Director of Community Development for the town. Part of Erin’s job includes planning the town’s Christmas celebration, which is in need of the perfect Christmas tree. Luckily for Erin, she knows just where to get it. Unfortunately, the owner, Kevin, isn’t too pleased with the town’s decision to cut the fire station’s funding and is unwilling to hand it over. As Erin tries to win him over, both she and Kevin find that their feelings for one another may be too strong to dismiss as easily as Kevin did with his tree.

I liked parts of this movie and disliked others. One of the more obvious parts of the movie that interested me was the relationship between Erin and Kevin. While it is dramatically drawn-out, watching them enjoy all the holiday events with his daughter, Claire, was adorable. From decorating gingerbread houses to making snow angels, who could not fall in love? On the other hand, while I love a good love triangle, I wasn’t too keen on how Erin handles it. In the beginning, before we know anything about Neil, Erin clearly believes that Neil is flirting with her, yet she is falling for Kevin. At the same time, RIGHT AFTER she and Kevin share a kiss, Erin agrees to go on a “date” with Neil. Does that kind of stuff annoy anyone else?

I will say that for the Director of Community Development, Erin doesn’t seem to be very good at her job. The fact that she needs a firefighter to tell her the plans she designed for the Tree lighting are a fire hazard is one thing, but when he points out that the bleachers she designed for the elderly, who like to sit during the ceremony, don’t even have railings, you know there’s a problem. Never mind the fact that she doesn’t really enjoy her job, Erin seems to really wait to the last minute to find the perfect tree, which I’m sure would result in a lot of problems for someone in her position in real life. Also, how someone managed to decorate that large of a tree in one day is beyond me, but I guess that’s movies for you, right?

A Christmas Tree Grows in Colorado may not make it on my top ten list of favorite Hallmark films, but it has a lot of potential. With Erin and Kevin’s sweet romance and a story centered on finding the perfect Christmas tree, you’ll definitely be entertained. While some parts of the movie may seem to take a while to get to the point, it still makes for a festive film that I’m sure many of you will enjoy!
