I watched this because I really like Autumn Reeser. Generally, any Christmas film she does for Hallmark is pretty cute so I had no qualms about tuning into this one. Starring Reeser and Antonio Cupo, A Glenbrooke Christmas follows Jessica (Reeser) an heiress who, in an effort to be known for who she is and not how much she’s worth, goes to a small town in Colorado named Glenbrooke that her mother grew up in, only to literally run into Kyle (Cupo), a local firefighter. After a rocky first encounter, the two start to spend more time together and begin to enjoy all the Christmas festivities the small town has to offer.
I hate to say it but this was not my favorite movie. Not just of Reeser’s but of Hallmarks in general. It was very predictable, which I’ve said before is nothing new when it comes to this Christmas channel’s lineup, but when you add nothing new to the mix, it gets very stale and unable to be enjoyed. While Reeser and Cupo did a good job, performance-wise, I have to say that even their characters were boring. I didn’t get invested in their romance, let alone their individual storylines.
The character of Kyle left a bad taste in my mouth. Not only is he pretty rude to Jessica in the beginning but he’s also somewhat prejudiced to those who have money in addition to being super dramatic throughout the whole movie, particularly when he finds out who Jessica really is. He just lets her leave because he wants to be stubborn and throw a temper tantrum. Don’t get me wrong, he definitely has his adorable moments, particularly when he shows up to read “The Night Before Christmas” to the kids in the community, but in general, he’s annoying, which makes it hard to understand why Jessica falls for him in the first place. Also, Jessica was totally right when they first meet. He was not using a crosswalk and he did come out of nowhere. He's lucky all that happened was that his cookies fell. I just had to add that in because it really annoys me when someone is clearly in the wrong and wants to blame it on the other person. Also, people who don't use a crosswalk and choose to walk in the middle of a busy road without looking if cars are approaching is irresponsible and stupid. As a firefighter, he should have more sense than that, am I right?
While A Glenbrooke Christmas definitely has its fill of Christmas festivities, the storyline isn’t what I wanted. It was stale and filled with predictable and uninteresting characters. While it ends in the typical Hallmark way (see my use of “predictable” in the paragraphs above), it isn’t enough for me to want to watch again anytime soon. Hopefully, Reeser and Cupo are given another Christmas film next year that has something more compelling to it in the story. Until then…
