A Nashville Christmas Carol is exactly what you would expect it to be. Aside from the added bonus of some top-notch country music stars as the ghosts, this movie stops there in terms of surprises. Starring Jessy Schram and Wes Brown, this film sees Vivienne (Schram), a television producer who finds herself working with her ex, Gavin, on a television Christmas event. Now, as a self-proclaimed workaholic, she is in desperate need of a change. So, in a familiar twist of events, the spirits from Christmas Past and Present are there to give her a push in the right direction.
While the story itself is very typical for this time of year, I thought this film did a nice job of keeping things fun, especially with Wynonna Judd, Kix Brooks, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, the latter playing the Spirit of Christmas Past and Christmas Present, respectively. The best part of this film, hands down, was the love story between Gavin and Vivienne. I thought Gavin was particularly endearing with his crush on Vivienne when we are taken into the past and even more so later on when they are both reminiscing on what went wrong. Any man that can admit he handled things wrong is someone that I can admire, and I think Vivienne does too (scratch that — she definitely knows).
As I mentioned earlier, while this film isn't anything new in terms of story, it does do a nice riff on a tale as old as time, with a few minor changes. With no Spirit of Christmas Future, this actually fits into the story quite nicely. As Wynonna’s character, Marilyn, states, “there is no such thing as a Spirit of Christmas Future,” which I really enjoyed because it makes everything seem more real. Why bother fixing the future when the present is your real problem? If you can fix what’s going on presently, you don’t need to worry about the future. In fact, if I ever get visited by my own Spirits, I hope they never show me the future. Too scary!
While A Nashville Christmas Carol has a lot of cute, Christmas moments, you won’t be missing out on anything major. The best part of this movie is Gavin and Vivienne, plus the great country stars, so if that’s what suits your fancy, then go for it! With the familiar comes the fun, right? Filled with great music and a story you’re sure to never forget, this film delivers exactly what it promises. While it’s not my cup of tea, per se, I know this will probably be a Christmas favorite for many! Let me know your thoughts on this film in the comments below!
