Movie Review: A Timeless Christmas

For any of you who don’t know, I’m very skeptical when it comes to time-traveling movies. Most of the time, they usually don’t make sense or they’re too cheesy. A Timeless Christmas meets somewhere in the middle. Starring Erin Cahill and Ryan Paevey, this film follows Charles Whitley (Paevey) as he is sent forward one hundred and fifty years into the future, due to a magical Christmas clock, where he meets Megan (Cahill), a tour guide at the Whitley mansion. While trying to figure out how to go back while also coming to terms with where he is presently, Whitely may just find that the future, and the people there, are where he was supposed to be all along.

While my skepticism of this movie was already rearing it’s ugly head as soon as it started, my interest in how this was going to play out kept me invested. Just from the trailer alone, I knew that this film could only end in one way — with Charles and Megan ending up together. The draw for me was in how they were going to get there. The fact that he had a fiancé waiting for him back in 1903 made this even more interesting. Unfortunately, that’s where the interesting bits end because once Whitely establishes himself in the 21st century, the movie starts to drag. Between Whitley constantly finding new things about our time fascinating or getting upset over what happened to his work in the past, I couldn’t bring myself to really care. I could give it another try, but what’s the point? I know how it ends now.

At the beginning of the film, we discover that Megan is actually a descendant of Rosie, Charles’ maid back in 1903. I thought that bit of information might lead to something more interesting down the road, but it doesn’t. It’s just an interesting fact, I guess? I had envisioned a bunch of different scenarios, one of which was that Rosie was the one who actually got the clock to work and somehow Megan would be able to do the same because of their shared bloodline, but nope. I guess that would be just too much drama in a film like this. Turns out, Rosie just donated the clock to the local University, believing that someone might need it one day. *Wink, wink.* If they had just shown one more scene with Rosie, maybe hinting that she knew all along what the clock would do, I feel like this film would’ve felt more complete. Instead, the film ends in typical fashion — with Jess and Charles dancing the night away, completely in love. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, but they could’ve added in just one more scene with Rosie to give it that extra cherry on top, you know what I mean?

All in all, this was a cute movie. Predictable to the end but enjoyable enough to watch, A Timeless Christmas mixes traditional Christmas cheer with classic charm that will give its audience something new in the lineup of Christmas films to enjoy. While I’m sure I will watch this again, it will probably be some time before it’s on the top of my watchlist. Then again, it’s a Christmas film, so it’s already beaten out Horror and Western films on said list, so that means it shouldn't be too long before this film sees the light of day again, right?
