Movie Review: Christmas Comes Twice

Between Love, Lights & Hanukkah! and this movie, my heart just exploded with nostalgia for my favorite 90’s television stars. Christmas Comes Twice stars Tamera Mowry-Housley and Michael Xavier as Cheryl and George, respectively. Cheryl has just come home for Christmas and decides to visit the town’s Christmas carnival. While there, she comes across a carousel that transports her back in time to five years prior where she is given a chance to change things — in both her career and her love life. With the help of George and her favorite science teacher, Ms. Nelson, played by Sheryl Lee Ralph, Cheryl must learn to appreciate what she has without ruining everything waiting for her in the present, including her newfound feelings for George.

Both Mowry-Housley and Xavier were so cute in this film. I loved watching them banter back and forth as natural competitors but of course, the best part was watching them fall in love. I was very interested in how their story was going to turn out. I knew they would inevitably end up together, but I was somewhat worried that this movie would take a page out of Hallmark’s A Timeless Christmas, and have her choose to stay in the past to stay with George. Thankfully, Cheryl does go back to the present as opposed to living out the past five years all over again and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with how this movie ended. I was this close to saying “awwwww,” when both Cheryl and George are reunited in the present. The fact that he waited for her all that time is enough for me to say that George might just be the most romantic character of Hallmark’s Christmas Hunks in 2020.

Ms. Nelson is without a doubt my favorite character in the movie. Whether it’s her love for Cheryl or her meddling personality, everything about this character was so sweet. Unlike Cheryl, I was not fortunate enough to have a teacher inspire me in the ways that Ms. Nelson did for her and I have to say, I think I’m jealous of a fictional character — and anyone else who had a Ms. Nelson in their life. Regardless, knowing what Cheryl knows, even I got emotional thinking about Cheryl going back to the present time knowing that Ms. Nelson wouldn’t be around. I mean, anyone who invites you into her home for a glass of merlot and some Christmas cookies is quite a woman, am I right?

I will say that the only thing that made me question the time-traveling aspect of the movie was how Cheryl gets there. She finds a carousel at the Christmas carnival, which of course, she gets on, and it promptly starts to move, thereby transporting her to the past. Naturally, she just assumes that the carousel moved on its own without really questioning the logistics of that, but okay. Fine. I’ll buy it. That's not what actually bugged me. It's how she got back to the present that really annoyed me. Finding the carousel once more, this time she shows George. However, once again, she gets on it and is "shocked" when she finds that it starts to move, only for her to yell that she’s not ready, which left me asking why she didn’t just jump off? It’s not like the carousel was moving at warp speed…Whatever. 🤦‍♀️

I couldn’t end this review without mentioning that as I was watching this, I realized that both Tamera, her sister Tia, and Mark Taylor are now all doing Hallmark movies! That being said, I will proceed to beg Hallmark to put all three of these actors into a film together just so I can have a Seventeen Again reunion. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you need to Google it ASAP. It’s a Disney Channel classic. Regardless, I need this reunion in my life and think everyone else does too.

Christmas Comes Twice is not only one of the cutest movies this year but I think it’s one of the most relatable. It’s honestly got something for everybody. Whether it’s not being comfortable with where you are in your career or just a love for science or baking, this movie will be something everyone can enjoy!
