If Danika McKellar is in anything Hallmark-related, I’m going to watch it, so of course, Christmas She Wrote was a no-brainer for me. Starring McKellar and Dylan Neal, this movie follows Kayleigh (McKellar) as she comes home for Christmas after her column at the paper has been “retired,” following a new editor-in-chief, Tripp (Neal), taking over and laying off several employees. However, Tripp soon realizes he’s made a huge mistake after his boss calls explaining that the future of the paper relies on Kayleigh and her column coming back, as it brings in a lot of subscribers. At the risk of losing his job, Tripp follows Kayleigh home in the hopes of getting her back. What he didn’t count on was falling in love with her.
I really loved this movie. Not only did McKellar and Neal do a great job with their performances, but the story itself was so cute and festive. I loved Kayleigh’s relationship with her sister, Amy (April Telek), and her best friend, Stephen (Andrew Francis). They don’t make friends like Stephen every day, especially ones that you get to work with on top of that. Watching the two of them made me want to see more of their dynamic. In fact, I think a series with all of these characters, Tripp and Amy included, would make quite a fun story to watch. This is not the first time Francis and McKellar have worked together. I believe the first movie they did together for Hallmark was Coming Home for Christmas in 2017. Funnily enough, McKellar's character always seems to be in need of a job when Francis is involved...🤔 Nevertheless, I have to say that while I enjoyed Coming Home For Christmas, Christmas She Wrote definitely tops the list as one of their best.
From the bakery that Amy owns to the town itself, Pineberry, CA, I was totally immersed in this story. While the story is about Kayleigh and Neal, Hallmark did a great job of making the visuals so homey and festive. Even I want to live in that town! I also loved watching Tripp slowly fall in love with Kayleigh. If you couldn’t tell, I’m a sucker for the stereotypical stubborn and hard-headed man whose heart is slowly melted by the smart and independent woman with a sarcastic sense of humor. Add in some Christmas cheer and you’ve got yourself one heck of a movie.
I think everyone will find something to enjoy with Christmas She Wrote. The story is a Christmas gem, with romance and snow in between every scene. McKellar and Neal are a perfect match in this fun story and if Hallmark doesn’t make a sequel to this, I’ll be heartbroken. I have no idea what the sequel could be about, but as long as I can see all of these characters again, I will be very, merrily happy.
