Five Star Christmas closed out the Thanksgiving week of new Christmas movies on Hallmark and I think it was a good choice! Starring Bethany Joy Lenz and Victor Webster, this movie follows Lucy (Lenz) as she comes home for Christmas, only to discover that her father turned her childhood home into an Inn. Not only that but a mysterious traveling journalist, who could make or break this new "start-up" appears, plus a new guest, Jake (Webster), which forces Lucy and her family to pretend to play the staff of the Ralston Inn in the hopes to get a good review.
This movie was super fun, which is no surprise considering that it has Lenz and Webster at the helm. They both give great performances, both as actors and singers (more Lenz than Webster). While there’s nothing special about their romance, I don’t really think there needs to be. I like watching them and they’re a cute pair. Aside from them, there is an influx of fun characters who make this movie quite an adventure, including Paula Shaw as Margo, a.k.a. Lucy’s grandmother. She’s is becoming one of my favorites in Hallmark movies. Just seeing her in any of them will get me to stay and watch, even if the movie itself is terrible. She usually plays the fun and caring grandmother who is loyal to her family, which I love. With her and the rest of the cast, what’s not to love?
While I love how the whole family comes together to make this Inn work, I know that if this was “real-life,” I would be pretty upset. As Lucy explains, a little heads up would’ve been nice. While the dad gives a half-hearted explanation, I think they all got on board a little too quickly. If I’m coming home for Christmas, I don’t want to share my house with a bunch of strangers. While it works out in the end, it makes me a little confused as to why the dad never just picked up the phone and told his kids what he wanted to do. It’s still his house and he can do what he wants with it, but as the kids pointed out, they could’ve helped him. Fathers….am I right?
If you want a family-friendly and fun Christmas movie, this is the one for you! Five Star Christmas is nothing short of sweet and charming. With Lenz and Webster doing their thing, I can’t imagine a film being anything but. Filled with toffee baking, candy-cane lovers, and a family bringing people together during the most wonderful time of the year, I, too, give this movie five stars (sorry, couldn’t resist).
