Movie Review: Good Morning Christmas

I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy this movie when I started it because it seemed like it was going to be fairly mundane, but I was wrong. Good Morning Christmas stars Alison Sweeney and Marc Blucas as two squabbling talk show hosts, Melissa and Brian. When Brian tells Melissa that he’s leaving the show, she must try and find his replacement while continuing to work with Brian under even tenser circumstances. It’s not until they start to spend more time together that they begin to realize how much they have in common — and how much they actually like each other.

For any of you who have seen Morning Glory or The Ugly Truth, this movie definitely had similar themes interwoven into this movie. From the two bickering co-workers at a morning talk show to admitting their feelings on live television, this movie covers similar bases. However, what makes it unique are Melissa and Brian. Underneath all the bickering, their respect for one another starts to transition into love and, as the audience, it’s super sweet to watch. Realizing that he doesn’t want to be replaced, Brian starts to spend more time with Melissa outside of the show, and the two begin to share in fun Christmas traditions to get into the holiday spirit. What could be cuter than that?

I have to say, if there was a morning talk show called “Merry & Bright,” I would totally tune in year-round, but I’d probably be only one of a few. The fact that Melissa and Brian had been doing this for years is a little shocking. In reality, I don’t think a morning talk show with a Christmas spin on it would get that much traction, but maybe I’m wrong. Either way, it left me curious as to what the two of them would cover when it wasn’t the Christmas season? Just regular news? I don’t think that would fit right with the title of their show…

The best part of this movie was the ending and I’m not saying that sarcastically. While a bit cheesy, it was super sweet to see Melissa and Brian ride off into town on a sleigh ride with the snow falling down around them. If any Christmas film is going to be cheesy, I hope they’re just as unapologetic as this one and go for it. I think it worked perfectly for the movie and if more Hallmark movies end in this way, I won’t complain.

Good Morning Christmas was a nice surprise and I could definitely see myself watching it again. Both Sweeney and Blucas are so good in this movie and I can’t wait to see what they do next year. With a charming romance that has a fun and festive storyline, this movie will not disappoint.
