When I saw the commercial for this film, I immediately knew I was going to watch it. I can’t really explain why other than just the concept for this movie sounded really cute. That and the actors in it made me believe that this would be one I wouldn’t want to miss…and I was right! Starring Vanessa Lengies (The Perfect Man!?) and Corey Sevier, Heart of the Holidays follows Sam (Lengies), a self-professed workaholic, who begrudgingly comes home for the holidays following a mishap with her job, where she runs into her old boyfriend, Noah (Sevier). When they end up working together to help their community, both Noah and Sam realize that they may just have a second chance at romance.
The highlight of this film was obviously the relationship between Sam and Noah. As soon as I saw them on screen together, I immediately fell in love. That push-pull love story is something I really enjoy watching and this relationship didn’t disappoint. Even though we can all assume how it’s going to turn out, it’s watching their story evolve that kept me interested. As Noah and Sam try to overcome how their relationship ended, it’s more fun to see how they reconnect and discover each other as adults in a fairly mature way. My only regret is that we don’t get to see more of their love story play out. Maybe if we’re lucky, Hallmark will do a sequel?
When it comes to meddling, no one does it better than one’s mother, am I right? Well, in my case, my mom is pretty good at knowing when to get involved and when to let me figure it out for myself. However, I can’t say the same for Sam’s mom. I even got annoyed on Sam’s behalf during certain scenes in the movie. If your daughter is telling you that she does not want to interact with her ex, why do you constantly try to get them together? If she were my mother, this would end in an all-out fight — especially when the mother is being so obvious about getting them together. At some point, you’ve got to let the two of them work it out for themselves, you know?
While Heart of the Holidays may not be anything new, I don’t mind an old story as long as it has good characters and a narrative I can invest in. Both Lengies and Sevier did a great job with their performances and left me yearning to see more of Noah and Sam as the film came to a close. With tons of baking, fun Christmas sweaters, and an epic Hallmark Christmas romance, what’s not to love about this movie?
