I never say no to an Ashley Williams’ Christmas movie. As the unsung queen of Christmas movies (Snow, anybody!?), I’m pretty sure she has been in at least one Christmas film for the past few years. At this point, is it even a Hallmark Christmas if Williams isn’t in a film? I think not. Just like her previous work, she does not disappoint with her latest, Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater.
Co-starring with Niall Matter, this film follows Maggie (Williams), a single mother who is preparing to spend Christmas alone when Lucas (Matter) literally runs into her life — and her Christmas tree. Realizing that he cannot go on his skiing trip to Aspen, Maggie offers him her guest house seeing as the only family he has in town just had a baby who will most definitely keep him up through the night. While he may start off as a Grinch, Lucas slowly starts to open up to Maggie and to the idea that staying in this charming town may not be such a bad thing.
I really enjoyed this movie. It has a lot of cute moments between Maggie and Lucas, as there should be. One sleigh ride in particular comes to mind. There’s also the whole ugly Christmas sweater-wearing part of this film that cannot be ignored. I LOVE Christmas sweaters and can’t explain how happy I am that they are becoming a staple in today’s Christmas events. The shade that Maggie and her daughter, Ellen, give Lucas in the beginning definitely hurt my soul but, thankfully, she learns the errors of her ways by the end of the film.
I can’t say enough about Williams. This movie in particular did a great job of showcasing her comedic talents. Just the scene of her talking to an unconscious Lucas in the hospital was enough to have me hooked. That’s not to say that Matter lacks in this art either. With his funny banter between Maggie and Ellen, this film is exactly the one you want to watch with a big bowl of popcorn and your best Hallmark-watching friends (which, for me, include my mom and my sister). Never Kiss a Man in A Christmas Sweater is one that you shouldn’t miss unless you hate the sickeningly-sweet romances between two ugly Christmas sweater-wearing adults during Christmastime.
