Movie Review: The Christmas Doctor

themarniemae

I was not prepared for The Christmas Doctor. Starring Holly Robinson Pete and Adrain Holmes, this film follows Zoey, or should I say, Dr. Zoey, a traveling doctor, who is asked to step in for Dr. Ray, who works in a small town called Willowbrook, as he takes two weeks to recover from a scheduled surgery. It’s there that she meets Luke, the local IT guy, who lets Zoey stay in his mother’s old (1985 old) house as she settles into the temporary job. Little does she know, Willowbrook, and everyone in the town will leave a permanent mark on her heart, including Luke. Not only that, but Dr. Ray has a hidden secret of his own that will make it hard for Zoey to goodbye to this charming town.

Holly Robinson Pete has become a Hallmark staple, especially with her Christmas films for the channel — and she’s not done. In just a few weeks she’ll star in Hallmark’s fourth film in the Christmas in Evergreen franchise, Christmas in Evergreen: Bells Are Ringing, which I believe focuses more on her character this time around! Her partner in crime, Adrian Holmes, a.k.a. my new favorite Hallmark Hunk, is in his debut Hallmark Christmas film and I sincerely hope it’s not his last. For all you Arrow fans, you might remember him as Frank Pike… Anyway, both Pete and Holmes were so good in the film. They had great chemistry together and, if I’m being honest, I really hope there is a sequel because the ending was not enough for me. I want to see them watching meteor showers together as they fix up his mother’s house while also recreating Star Wars fights with his lightsaber (you’ll get it if and when you watch the movie). Not only that, but this is one of the rare Hallmark movies in which both parties are mature adults whose love story is a great metaphor for being written in the stars. Did anyone else pick that up or am I reading way too much into this? With the whole love of stars and fate playing a major role in the overall story, who could not help but conclude that it was destined for Luke and Zoey to be together?

The only other love story that comes close to Dr. Zoey and Luke’s is the (platonic) one between her and Dr. Ray. I absolutely loved the ending to their story. Not only did Dr. Zoey work in the armed forces as the doctor, she actually met Dr. Ray’s son, Oliver, who sadly died on duty but left a permanent mark in her heart. As it is stated in the trailer, “every doctor has that one patient that they’ll always remember,” and that’s hers. Even though we can all admit that this was probably no surprise, I still loved watching Dr. Ray explain everything to Zoey. Both she and Dr. Ray’s reactions are so heartwarming that it made that yearning for a sequel even stronger.

Between the sweet romance between Dr. Zoey and Luke to the heartwarming story between her and Dr. Ray’s family, this movie checks a lot of boxes. While it’s not too sad that you have to worry about grabbing tissues, it’s just sweet enough to have you coming back for more. So, if you couldn’t tell already, I absolutely loved The Christmas Doctor, and I think you will too! Let me know your thoughts about this movie and more in the comments below!
