Unlocking Christmas stars Taylor Cole and Steve Lund in this new Christmas movie. It follows Kate (Cole), a doctor who has just moved to a new town when she meets Kevin (Lund), who has just returned from duty in the Air Force. However, it’s not until both of them receive a mysterious package, encased with a riddle and a key on their doorsteps, that they decide to work together on this Christmas scavenger hunt, discovering that the other may just be the key to their closed-off hearts.
I’m a fan of both Cole and Lund. Lund, in particular, has been a favorite of mine since I saw him in The Christmas Cottage, one of my Hallmark Christmas favorites. Not only am I a fan of both actors, but also of scavenger/mystery movies, especially when they involve Christmas. When I saw the commercial for this movie, I knew instantly that I was going to watch it. It made me think of a movie Hallmark put out last year called Christmas Scavenger Hunt but with more of a magical feel to it. In many ways, I was right. It was such a cute idea that I wish someone would send me on a similar Christmas adventure with a super cute guy. I’m still waiting…
Aside from the predictable “overdramatic fight” that Hallmark makes most of its couples have in their movies, there’s not much to dislike about Unlocking Christmas. It’s got that homey feeling to it that makes you feel instantly comfortable and relaxed, so watching it was so much fun. That also could be because like many mothers, when Kevin comes home, his mother makes a feast to welcome him back, filled with all of his favorite foods. It reminded me of my own mom's reaction to anyone coming home and once that happens, I’m inevitably fifty percent more inclined to watch it whenever it comes back on. Speaking of his mother, it was pretty obvious she was behind this treasure hunt for lack of a better word but about halfway through, I knew Kevin's Dad had to be involved too, which ended up being correct. I have to tell you, nothing beats the feeling of sweet victory when your assumptions are proven correct, even if it was obvious from the beginning. Also, if and when I become a parent, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'm going to do this to my kids. It's too fun not to...
I absolutely loved that both of these characters are involved in the “helping others” field. With Kate being a doctor and Kevin being in the Air Force, this film did a great job of showcasing two careers that are so vital to our country, especially with the year we’ve been having. I guess the irony about both of their characters, which becomes a running joke throughout the movie, is that while they are both in the helping professions, neither of them like to accept help themselves. Luckily, this little treasure hunt changes that for the better.
Unlocking Christmas will keep you entertained with all the fun adventures each riddle takes them on. On top of that, it gives you a really sweet romance and lots of Christmas activities that would make anyone envious. In fact, if you’re so inclined, this movie also gives some really great ideas on how to have some fun during the Christmas season, such as decorating your own ornaments or sending Christmas cards to the troops overseas. With such a cute premise, who could resist this movie?
