Today is one of my favorite days of the year, right behind Christmas and Thanksgiving. That’s right — it’s D.E.A.R. Day! For those who don’t know, D.E.A.R. stands for Drop Everything And Read and is a national celebration meant to remind everyone how important — and fun — reading is. More specifically, it’s meant to make reading together a family priority.
Ever since they introduced this event to us as kids, I’ve always loved it. I mean, it’s a day dedicated to reading! What’s not to love? Not only did it get you out of classes, but it also meant that teachers couldn’t bother you. You could just sit wherever you wanted and READ. I honestly wish every day could be D.E.A.R. day — but one that I got paid to do, you know?
I’m ashamed to say that, until recently, I never knew this day was created in honor of Beverly Cleary. Cleary was born on April 12, 1916, and one of America’s most successful authors. If you missed my dedication to her, check it out here! So, in honor of Mrs. Cleary, and of course, my love of reading, I am most DEFINITELY participating in this event. My book of choice will be the latest in our book of the month selection — The Little Paris Bookshop. The irony of wanting to read a book about a book is not lost on me, but if you think that that realization has lessened my enthusiasm for reading this, then you haven’t been paying attention.
Will any of you participate in D.E.A.R.? If so, what book will you choose to pick up? Let me know in the comments below!
