Learning to Play 🎹

Learning the piano is really hard.

Really. Freaking. Hard.

My first lesson was learning the notes and the basic format of the keys on a piano. It was here that I discovered that I do not have piano fingers. My mother, who learned piano as a kid, said that it’s just going to come with practice. That is probably true, but out of all the things that could’ve been a hindrance to learning the piano, I did not think it would be my fingers.

My goal is to learn how to play the Charlie Brown theme song by Christmas. For those who don’t know, that song is ridiculously hard to learn even for those who have been playing piano for a while (or so I’m told). The main issue is that both hands have to be playing notes at the same time. With all five fingers having to be in sync but also out of sync, it’s a nightmare to learn. My middle finger and my pinky are what’s giving me the hardest time. I cannot get them to play together without my fourth finger getting in the way. Ahh, the fun things in life.

The good news is that in my last lesson, I finally started to hear the beginning of the song as I played the first five keys in sync at normal speed. Yup, five keys is all I can do, but I’m determined to get better, so more practice for me! I have to admit, teaching myself has been really fun. If I can get even close to my goal by Christmas, I’ll be really happy! Wish me luck and I’ll keep you posted on how things go!!

Have you ever self-taught yourself anything? How did it go? Let me know in the comments below!
