I feel like I need to state this: I’m Irish. I did Irish Step as a girl. I indulge in Irish bread every year and really get a kick out of putting up our Irish flag outside — classic nostalgia. However, as I looked at the calendar this year, it came as a surprise how soon St. Patrick’s Day was. I realized I had been, unfortunately, more focused on decorating for Easter and preparing for Spring, that I almost forgot to celebrate this holiday.
Well, no more! I’ve decided to go all-in for this St. Patrick's Day. In elementary school, this used to be such a fun day to celebrate. We would get decked up in green, orange, and white colors, with shamrock necklaces and headbands. Honestly, the more the merrier was the sentiment during those days. This year, I wanted to get back that feeling. I got my best Irish colors and, seeing how it’s still cold where I’m living, my authentic Irish sweater definitely made an appearance. My mom and I made St. Patrick’s Day sugar cookies and as an added bonus, I watched the Disney Channel Original Movie, The Luck of the Irish. Fun, right!?
My mom has so much information about our family, some of whom still live in Ireland today, including the wonderful Irish traditions that her family took part in, which she passed down to us. For instance, her grandmother knitted two wool blankets that are still used in our house to this day. My sister found that particularly fascinating because, over the past year, she has found a passion for knitting herself. As a nice surprise, my mom bought some festive cupcakes that, of course, were devoured within the hour! I have to say, this was the perfect way to celebrate for me. But really, when cupcakes and Disney Channel movies are involved, can it really be bad?
