Movie of the Week: The Upside

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

Sweet. That’s one word to describe this film. Starring Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, it’s a film about a man named Phillip, a quadriplegic (Cranston) who hires Dell (Hart) as a caregiver even though he has no experience. Being a Kevin Hart movie, I expected the laughs, and he delivered. The humor was REAL. Everything that the movie “made fun of” were things that anyone would do if they were in that situation. That’s what gave the movie life - its realistic sense of the subject. I was actually very surprised at that — until I found out that this was based on a true story.

The fact that this is based on a true story and that the characters are still alive today is what makes this special. It couldn’t go the usual route that most films on this subject usually take. For example, the film starts with Phillip telling off his friend for taking extraordinary measures to save his life and makes a point to tell Dell that he is under strict instructions to D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate) him if it comes to that. Just based on that, I assumed that Phillip was doomed to die by the end of the film. Suffice to say, that was not the case, for which I’m eternally grateful. As I mentioned before, it was a sweet ending. For fear of spoiling too much, I recommended that you watch it yourself if you are attracted to feel-good movies because that’s what this is. I would even say that it’s sweet without going too cheesy. Unlike a lot of films of this genre, it found the perfect balance. Is this movie for everyone? Probably not. But this post isn’t about whether everyone will like it — just about whether I did. And I did.

I won’t say that this is a family film. It’s not that kind of Kevin Hart comedy. But maybe it just depends on the family? I saw this with my mom and my two aunts, and we all loved it. Did my sisters want to see it? No. Will they? Probably not. Would they like it if they did? Sure. But I’m pretty positive that it won’t be their favorite film of the year. It also has certain scenes that some may not find funny if watching it with their parents. Phillip gets an erection, which IS a hilarious scene, but some may not find it that funny watching it with their dad. To each their own, but if you feel unsure of whether or not to watch this, I say go for it. I enjoyed it and I think you will too.
