If you couldn’t already tell, I’m a huge Marvel nerd. That being said, I figured that this month could be “Marvel” month, in which I review their new shows and some movies that I hadn’t reviewed before, which leads me to WandaVision…
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t totally sold on this show — mostly because I had no idea what it was about. The trailers made the concept very vague and what was shown in the trailer was a very different version of Wanda and Vision than I was used to. I love both of these characters and when Vision was killed in Endgame, it killed me because he and Wanda were so cute together. That was a big part of why I decided to tune into this show — I needed to know how Vision was alive!
By the end of the finale, I can honestly say that I was very pleased with it. For those who don’t know, the first five episodes pay homage to a specific television show from every decade. For example, the first one was inspired by The Dick Van Dyke Show, while another one was clearly inspired by the early-2000 reality shows. So fun! Elizabeth Olsen was unbelievable in this show. If you didn’t think she was talented before (which is RIDICULOUS), this will absolutely change your mind! She just nails every episode. The same can be said for Paul Bettany. Both he and Elizabeth Olsen play so well off of one another that it’s no wonder why we love their characters together. If anything, it made me sympathize with Wanda because it let us get inside her head more than ever before.
For those who love Easter eggs, this show is definitely for you. Not only did they tease us with “the other Pietro,” a.k.a. the X-Men version played by Evan Peters, but each episode became a mini-mystery in and of itself. They even gave us a “White Vision.” 🤔I’m still not sure what to make of him, but I’m very interested to see where it goes. However, the best addition to this show was, of course, Agatha — the biggest mystery of all (🎶 IT WAS AGATHA ALLLL ALONNNG! 🎶). Like many, I absolutely loved her. Played by Kathryn Hahn, she ends up being another witch who is obsessed with Wanda. It’s their face-off at the end that sets Wanda up for her future in the MCU.
Which leads me to this: The final episode in which Wanda finally becomes the Scarlett Witch was so satisfying. I actually never realized that we, as the audience, had not referred to her “officially” as the Scarlett Witch yet. We all knew that that was who she was in the comics, but in the MCU, she was always just Wanda. I had just assumed that the “Scarlett Witch” was already a given, but I liked that Marvel actually gave her this arc! We already knew that Wanda was a badass but this scene was beyond anything I could’ve dreamed for her. Seeing her in her new “costume” was so cool. It’s definitely one of my favorites of all the Marvel superheroes so far!
Like Wanda herself, I had really hoped that it wouldn’t end the way it inevitably had to. Watching her realize that she was going to lose her family — again — was so heartbreaking. I can’t tell you how many times this show made me cry. First, when we see Wanda “reunite” with Vision (“I can’t feel you”😭) and this last scene where she and Vision say goodbye just killed me. Can Wanda just have a happy ending!? Pleeeassse!!
Outside of Wanda’s main storyline, we got to revisit a lot of really fun characters that we haven’t seen in a while. Darcy and Monica were my FAVORITES. We also got FBI agent Jimmy Woo back, who was great! I loved that they had Woo demonstrate that he finally nailed how to do the card trick Scott had shown him in Ant-Man 2! Such a good tie-in! My only complaint about the series overall was that they waited until the very end to tie up all these loose ends. Normally, that wouldn’t be a problem, but there were so many storylines that had to wrap up that it seemed rushed for these supporting characters, who deserved way more than just a two-minute explanation.
Like all Marvel movies, they can’t let you go without one final scene to keep you on your toes. As we find Wanda in a secluded cabin in the woods, we see that she is practicing astral projection right before she hears the cries of her boys. AND THEN IT CUTS TO BLACK. WHAT!? I have so many questions! All we know is that Wanda is going to be in Doctor Strange 2 (which explains the astral projecting), but aside from that, NOTHING. We don’t even know where “White Vision” flew off to. Or who Monica was speaking to at the end! Either way, this show set up some really interesting stories to be uncovered and used for future movies, and I absolutely loved it. It was fresh, fun, and still Marvel. I really couldn’t ask for more.
